Kaitieke School Assessment Plan and Overview 

At Kaitieke School, assessment is an ongoing part of everyday teaching and learning. Its purpose is to support teachers to understand each learner’s progress, identify next steps, and ensure teaching is responsive, meaningful, and effective.

Teachers gather evidence of learning through classroom observations, discussions, and a range of assessment tools. This information is used to inform planning, improve classroom programmes, and support each student’s progress and achievement.

Throughout the year, teachers develop a clear picture of each learner’s progress using ongoing assessment and Overall Teacher Judgements (OTJs). This information helps us to:

• Identify individual learning needs and strengths.
• Plan targeted teaching and learning experiences.
• Provide timely feedback and next steps.
• Support students to make progress towards their goals.
• Report to whānau and the Board of Trustees.

We carry out formal assessment twice a year (Terms 2 and 4) to support reporting requirements and to help confirm teacher judgements. Ongoing assessment is also used throughout the year to guide teaching and learning decisions.

Kaitieke School remains up to date with Ministry of Education requirements while always keeping the best interests of our students at the centre of decision-making. Assessment practices are designed to support learning, protect student mana, and ensure every learner is appropriately challenged, supported, and able to experience success.

All assessment information is used carefully and confidentially to strengthen teaching practice and improve outcomes for learners.
